How to start a search to locate missing/stolen items?

A relative had many autographed pictures from movie stars of the Silver Screen. They were in storage and disappeared. Most were inscribed to Roti. She collected Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Vivian Leigh, James Steward and many more. I've seen websites that sell autographed photos, do I just search each one or start contacting each site?
