Do you write to companies when you purchase a sub-par product?

If so do you request your money back or a replacement product? Just curious, I find myself doing it more and more as I am disappointed with the quality of products these days. I don't necessarily request monetary compensation, I want them to know the product sucks (for lack of a better term) however I do feel like a good company should be willing to please the consumer.
